About Earth Inc.
The story of Earth, Incorporated starts with many years of
groundbreaking work lead by Robert Costanza, Ph.D. Dr. Costanza has
been at the forefront of the development of Ecological Economics. It
was his visionary leadership that inspired the creation of Earth, Inc.
to achieve its bold mission: to
enhance human well-being by promoting sustainable, fair, and efficient
stewardship of Earth's natural, social, human and built capital. Earth, Inc. was established in the state of Vermont in
August of 2006 as a non-profit corporation. The organization is
structured to advance its charitable social mission in part through entrepreneurial,
earned income strategies. Earth, Inc. is affiliated with the
Gund Institute for Ecological Economics at the University of Vermont,
but no financial support is provided by the university. Earth, Inc. is a non-profit
that is for profit, but a new definition of what profit is. Corporations
have demonstrated their ability to operate on a global scale more
effectively than any other existing institution. Globalization has
proven that corporate institutions can effectively bridge the gaps
between nations even when political differences persist. Earth, Inc.
uses the corporate model to create a much-needed inclusive global
institution that considers all people and future generations equally.
Like any corporation, Earth, Inc.’s objective is to maximize profit for
its shareholders, but profit for this global institution is defined as
every human's wellbeing, established by sustainable use and enhancement
of Natural, Social, Human, and Built capital. |
